How We Test
Our methodology is designed around one outcome: translation you can trust in compact rooms at low listening levels. We combine standardized small-room measurements with real-world cross-device checks and package every pick as a complete system (monitor + isolation/stands + placement map + optional sub + DSP starting points).
Test Environment
• Rooms: Two reference rooms representative of bedrooms/project spaces—approximately 11×10×8 ft and 14×12×9 ft—with known modal behavior and modest treatment.
• Listening distance: 0.8–1.2 m nearfield at a typical small desk; ear height aligned to tweeter acoustic axis.
• Levels: Calibrated to 74 dB SPL (C, slow) at the listening position for sustained work with brief loudness checks.
• Mounting: Rigid stands or isolation pads with tilt/toe-in adjustments; documented desk depth and surface material.
Measurements (Repeatable and Comparable)
• On-axis and off-axis response: Log sweeps, high-resolution capture, windowed and spatially averaged to reflect nearfield reality; 1/12–1/6 smoothing for readability.
• Low-frequency behavior: Boundary and desk-reflection studies at multiple placements; modal interaction mapping; effective low-SPL extension.
• Distortion and headroom: THD vs. SPL at low and moderate levels; compression behavior; honest max usable SPL in small rooms.
• Directivity and imaging: Horizontal/vertical polars and crossover behavior; sweet-spot width assessment at a small desk.
• Noise and ergonomics: Idle hiss at nearfield, port/amp artifacts, physical controls, and build.
Sub and DSP Integration
• Sub matching: Crossovers at typical points (60/70/80/90 Hz) with polarity/phase sweeps and group delay checks to preserve punch and timing.
• Room correction: Baseline tests "raw," then with popular tools (e.g., Sonarworks) using target curves that avoid double-correction and phase weirdness. We publish starting-point presets and when to prefer minimal EQ.
Translation Protocol
• Reference program: Curated music mixes, dialogue, and sound-for-video stems at low SPL; we log how balance, vocals, and low end hold up.
• Cross-device checks: Earbuds, phones, laptop speakers, car, soundbar/TV, and a small PA. We track how decisions on the monitors carry across.
• Fatigue and clarity: Multi-hour sessions to assess vocal intelligibility, HF glare, and decision speed.
Scoring and Recommendations
We rate monitors on translation, tonality, imaging/sweet spot, low-SPL low end, distortion/headroom, noise, ergonomics, and value. Recommendations are grouped by budget and room size and always include:
• Placement map and toe-in guidance
• Isolation/stand suggestions
• Optional sub model and crossover/phase/level starting points
• Room-correction targets tailored to compact rooms
